Somerset Junior Cup Finals last weekend

By Kate Oram
We have today received a copy of a letter sent by Paul Tottle of Somerset RFU to the Bath Chronicle concerning the Somerset Junior Cups played last weekend – (see below). Bath Rugby has sought to widen the use of the Rec by allowing amateur rugby matches to be played at our ground as we near the end of the season. We have adopted this policy for many years now and dozens of amateur cup finals and other special games have been played at the Rec. However, all games are scheduled under the clear understanding that they would have to be moved to a reserve ground if weather conditions were poor. The organisers understood this – as Mr Tottle makes clear, as it affected last weekend’s matches. The alternative is that we don’t allow any amateur teams to play at our ground – what a shame that would be for all concerned!
To The Editor

I received a call today regarding the Somerset Junior Cups scheduled to be played at the Rec over the weekend. As Somerset Junior Cups Organiser I wish to state the County stance on the matter.

The Junior finals returned to the Rec last season and a great weekend was had by all, with the matches being played in glorious sunshine. This season the finals were again scheduled for the Rec, and as with all sporting events it is subject to the weather conditions.

Being aware that the weather may play a part over the weekend, Walcot RFC was placed on standby. It was decided to leave the decision until as late as possible so as to not disappoint the teams by moving the venue on the Thursday.  It was at 10am on the Saturday that Somerset RFU/Bath RFC decided to move the games to Walcot RFC. They did an outstanding job of hosting the finals and they deserve a lot of credit. I am aware that for the 4 teams involved it was a let down not to play on the Rec, but all matches are subject to the weather conditions and the junior finals are no exception. Bath RFC were extremely disappointed not to host the finals on Saturday, especially after the success of last season.

With regard to Sunday’s finals, both Walcot RFC and Keynsham RFC were on standby as alternative venues dependant on the pitch inspection at 10am. With a fine day forecast all 3 finals were played on the Rec.

It was unfortunate that we lost the 2 Saturday finals but the weather intervened and we made a decision which we felt was right on the day. I am aware of the disappointment as I had to inform the coaches and players of the decision.

I would finally like to thank Bath and Walcot for hosting the finals and for Keynsham being on standby.
