| Martin joins the RFU in June and will be involved in the coaching of the U20 team, which will now be led by Mark Mapletoft who has worked alongside Nigel Redman for the last 18 months. Since September of last year Martin has been working as the Bath Academy forwards coach. Nigel Redman, who coached the England U20 squad to a Grand Slam in this year’s RBS 6 Nations, has accepted the new post of Elite Coach Development Manager reporting to the Head of Elite Coach Development Kevin Bowring.
Martin Haag said “I’m really looking forward to joining the RFU. It’s a very exciting and challenging role and hopefully I will be able to continue the good work that Nigel and Mark have been doing. My coaching work at club level has gone well and I see this appointment as an opportunity to take what I’ve learnt onto a national stage with young players at the National Academy.”
Martin ‘Haagy’ Haag is from Cornwall and made 310 first team appearances in the second row for Bath between 1987 and 2001 and was capped twice by England against Argentina in 1997. Martin then combined a player/coach role at Cornish Pirates with his job as a coach at the Bath Academy before moving to Bristol Rugby in 2003 to work with their first team as an assistant coach. After leaving Bristol in 2007 he was assistant coach to the England Under 18 side that toured Australia and then returned to coach at the Bath Academy in September 2007.
Chief Executive, Bob Calleja expressed his gratitude earlier today: “We are very appreciative of Martin’s contribution this year on both his coaching with the Academy and on the admin side with his interim position as our Team Manager.
"Everyone at Bath Rugby respects that his heart has always been in coaching and we believe that his new appointment is an excellent career move for him. We are sincerely grateful for everything that he has done at the club and wish him all the success in his new position.”
