GUINNESS ‘A’ LEAGUE

In 2003 a new competition was launched for Premiership clubs’ ‘A’ sides.  Now known as the Guinness ‘A’ League, the competition is split geographically into North and South conferences with six sides making up each conference. The clubs then play each other on a home and away basis with the top side from each conference playing for the right to be crowed champions.
The competition has proven to capture the imagination of players and supporters alike with attendances at the Rec for these matches increasing year on year.
There are many advantages to a structured second team competition. Squad members that are not selected for the match day squad will now have the opportunity to play regular competitive rugby of a good standard. It will also provide a stepping stone for younger players to ease their path from Academy rugby into the dizzy heights of the Guinness Premiership. Additionally, players returning from injury will be able to gain much-needed match fitness as part of their rehabilitation process.

This team will be coached mainly by the Academy coaches with assistance from the 1st team coaching staff.

Guinness ‘A’ League matches are usually played at the Rec on Monday evenings with a 7.15pm kick-off. Entry is free of charge and the Clubhouse bar is open.

POWERGEN NATIONAL TROPHY

New to the 2004-05 season, Guinness Premiership clubs will compete in the Powergen National trophy competition in the guise of second or ‘A’ teams. This is a National knock-out competition which all RFU affiliated clubs can enter and Premiership ‘A’ sides will be entered at round three of the competition. The final is due to be played at Twickenham and the rounds will mirror those of the new-look Powergen Cup this season.
