Redruth turned over by U19s

Match report by Hilary Weale
Bath Rugby U19s won a hard-fought game against Redruth, away, finishing with a 41-10 victory.
The scoreline flattered Bath because Redruth were more than worthy opponents. It was the ability of the young Bath squad to turn the ball over and counter attack at pace that resulted in many of the six tries they scored. Redruth scored a try in each half but had to work hard for both against an otherwise sound Bath defence.

Straight from the kick-off, Bath attacked and kept the ball alive through many phases, and only a poor final pass prevented them from scoring in the opening minute. Bath were playing with the wind at their backs, away from the famous hellfire corner!

After 11 minutes, scrum-half Steven Depledge made a sharp break from a scrum on the Redrugth 22-metre line and used his pace to score wide out. Fly-half Scott Simmons converted with a great kick.

Midway through the half, the back row won turnover ball and centre Louis Messer released full-back Lee Audis with a well-timed pass to score by the post, and Simmons converted.

There followed a period of Redruth pressure and after several attempts at crossing the line they scored wide through their right wing, but the conversion missed.

From the restart, Bath camped in the opposition’s 22 and after a good catch and drive by pack, debutant flanker Alec Concannon peeled off to score, and Simmons added the two points again. On the stroke of half-time, Simmons added a penalty, to make it 5-24.

Both teams used all their subs during the second half but the pace and quality of the match were maintained to the end. Further tries for Bath were scored by Jack Cuthbert, James Doubleday and Louis Messer, and Simmons added one conversion. Redruth replied through a well-worked catch and drive move, with their No 8 going over.
