The update below was written by Tamara Johnson:
I can hardly believe I have been in the Salisbury spinal unit for three months. I distinctly remember the day I arrived here – I was so excited to finally be in a place where I would receive the specialist treatment I needed, and my hopes have not been disappointed.

I have a dedicated physiotherapist, occupational therapist and consultant, backed up by a team of excellent nursing staff. Each week I am given a timetable consisting of both individual and group therapy sessions, and in my spare time I am normally found doing extra work in the gym. I am often pleased to see the weekend as I work so hard in the week I need my Saturday morning lie in!

Initially when I arrived here I spent a number of weeks on bed rest (lying flat in bed 24 hours a day) which allowed my body time to start healing. I have built up time spent in my wheelchair each day, starting with just 15 minutes, to the point where I am now out of bed all day long. It is great to finally be mobile again.

After the accident I was completely paralysed from the chest down, but thankfully sensation has begun to return throughout my body.

Movement, although a little weak, has returned to both arms, and more recently I have shown some signs of movement in my right hand and legs. However, the doctors are unable to say how much more movement is likely to return.

Over the last month my physiotherapy has focused on strengthening my arms and developing balance whilst sat up. In the last fortnight I have started hydrotherapy and I have also been allowed out of hospital for a trip into Salisbury, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Over the next few weeks I hope to try archery and table tennis, as I have been told it is a little too soon for wheelchair rugby!

I am generally in very good spirits, thanks to the amazing support I have received over the past months. Thank you to everyone who has sent kind words and encouragement through the Community Foundation – this has helped keep me going. Now that I am able to use my computer I will keep you updated of my progress through the website.
