Players are identified through a variety of routes, club, school, university or County (CB) Schools Of Rugby, development and representative squads. The most common way is through identification by CB Rugby Development Officers, with players usually being nominated for EPDG trials during their under 15 year.
The EPDG is made up of three groups. “EPDG Gold Squad” 10 players maximum who have been assessed with potential to join the full time Academy squad. “EPDG Silver Squad” 10 players maximum who have been identified as having the potential to join the gold group. EPDG Bronze Squad 25 players maximum who have been nominated by the process above and spend at least one season training at the academy both during school holidays and evenings. This process is in place to improve the skills, fitness and game understanding of players and also to act as a means of identification of players for progression to other academy groups.
This group of players varies between 10 – 20 individuals who are jointly funded by England RFU and Bath Rugby who provide resources for the development of fitness, nutrition, video analysis, physiotherapy, lifestyle management, educational advice and guidance, plus a managed match playing programme. The main aim of Bath Rugby is to give players in all of these groups equal opportunity to prepare for the step-up to Premiership and international rugby.
